Price the controls

• Line-rate inspection at the edge: near-free. Buy it everywhere you terminate.
• Deep inspection on bulk flows: a real constant in throughput — do it at the hub once, not at every hop.
• TLS interception: pain premium. Spend on the flows where credentials matter, not the OS updates stream.

Where the cheap wins live

Warnings to zero for management planes. MFA on WMI... on the jump hosts. Patch tiers audit. These cost nearly no latency and defuse the cheap intrusions that become expensive ones.

Frame every review as a security tax return: receipts, dollars, -ms. The gold-platers and the holes share a failure: spending without a budget. The hardened-fast network is just ... well priced.
